History of IIUM
The idea to
establish the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) was mooted on 12
January 1982 by Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the Prime Minister of Malaysia,
at a meeting with the then Minister of Education, Dato' Amar Dr. Sulaiman Daud,
the Director - General of Education, Tan Sri Dato' Hj Murad bin Mohd. Nor and
two other persons.
Assoc. Prof.
Dr. Kamal bin Hassan, then of University Kebangsaan Malaysia (National
University of Malaysia), a senior academic official who attended the meeting,
was entrusted with preparing the first working paper on the concept of the
university which the Hon. Prime Minister had in mind. The university was meant
to be a comprehensive institution of higher learning offering degree programmes
in the sciences, engineering, medicine, social sciences and arts. Islamic values
would, however, be integrated into all the disciplines.
IIUM was
officially established on 20 May 1983 when the University received its
'Establishment Order' from His Majesty the Yang Dipertua Agong, HRH Sultan Haji
Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah ibni AlMarhum Sultan Abu Bakar Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mu'adzam
Shah, after an exchange of Diplomatic Notes of co-sponsorship between the
Government of Malaysia and a number of Muslim Governments as well as the
Organization Islamic Conference (OIC). This was a necessary condition for the
establishment of an international university in Malaysia.
The
university's language of instruction was to be English and Arabic, and many of
its students would have to come from overseas. As the Malaysian law did not
allow for this, IIUM was incorporated under the Companies Act of 1965. Thus it
became the first international university and the first public university in
Malaysia to use English as the medium of instruction and administration.
On 1 July
1983, HRH Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah ibni AlMarhum Sultan Abu
Bakar Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mu'adzam Shah was appointed as the first Constitutional
Head of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) by assent of His
Majesty the Yang DiPertuan Agong.
The
University operates under the direction of a Board of Governors consisting of
representatives from the sponsoring governments and organizations, namely :
Malaysia (host country), Bangladesh, Egypt, Libya, Maldives, Pakistan, Saudi
Arabia, Turkey and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
The first
batch of 153 students from Malaysia and abroad were enrolled for the first
academic session, which started on 8 July 1983. Courses were conducted under the
Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Laws, Centre for Fundamental Knowledge and the
Centre for Languages.
The first
batch of 153 graduates received their degrees and diplomas during the First
Convocation held on 10 October 1987. 68 graduates were conferred Bachelor of
Economics (B.Econ) degrees, 56 Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degrees, and 29 Qadis were
conferred Diploma in Law and Administration of Islamic Judiciary.
Before the
commencement of the First Convocation, HRH Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in
Billah ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mu'adzam Shah was
officially installed as the Constitutional Head of IIUM.

Introduction
to IIUM
There is
absolutely no other Islamic University in the world like the IIUM. It is the
only Islamic university which uses English as its medium of instruction and
administration since its inception. It blends in a creative and harmonious
fashion the modern and professional disciplines with traditional values and
moral virtues. Its female students population is more than the male and students
come from more than 90 countries. Right from its inception, IIUM has spared no
effort to ensure that it provides the best tertiary education possible in all
branches of knowledge. It scours the entire world in its recruitment exercises,
for it would employ the most accomplished scholars for its academic departments
and appoint committed professionals to run its administration. Its
state-of-the-art facilities—physical and otherwise—are the envy of other
institutions. And its graduates are among the most sought-after by employers
looking for knowledgeable and skilful professionals who, in addition, are
committed to moral and ethical values.
IIUM is a dream come true for the whole Muslim world by unifying reason with
revelation, science with religion and ethics with professional courses. This is
a place where great leaders of the future are being nurtured and trained.
Besides it excides the spirit of optimism and moderation. Its establishment in
1983 was the fulfilment of one of the major aspirations of the contemporary
global Muslim community to regain the Ummah's leadership in the quest for
knowledge. This yearning of the Ummah is a key element in IIUM's vision
statement:
"To be an
international centre of educational excellence which integrates Islamic revealed
knowledge and values in all disciplines and which aspires to the restoration of
the Ummah's leading role in all branches of knowledge."
IIUM
operates under the direction of a Board of Governors with representatives from
the eight sponsoring governments and the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).
It maintains links with governments and institutions all over the world, such as
the League of Islamic Universities, the International Association of
Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. It is also
affiliated with several Malaysian-based businesses that provide opportunities
for students to gain practical work experience.
Currently,
IIUM is home to 15,000 students and 3,000 teaching and administrative staff
members. Many of the students and members of the academic staff are expatriate.
The faculties (Arabic: Kulliyyahs) are as follows: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty
of Engineering, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Allied Health Science, Faculty
of Science, Faculty of Architecture and Enronmental Design, Faculty of of
Information and Communication Technology, Ahmad Ibrahim Faculty of Laws and
Faculty of Islamic Revealed Knowledge.
The
university's physical facilities are located at three sprawling campuses and
Matriculation Centre. This is a far cry from its humble beginnings in 1983 when
it operated from temporary quarters with 153 students and a handful of lecturers
and administrators.
Graduates
from IIUM are admired for their diligence and abilities not only in the
organisations they work, but also in universities throughout the world where
they have gone for further studies. This is, without doubt, one of the results
of IIUM's rigorous commitment to its mission, which is:
"To revive and revitalise the Islamic concepts and traditions of learning, which
regard the quest for knowledge as an act of worship and the spirit of science as
emanating from the holy Quran. The university endeavours to introduce a unified
teaching and learning process along with the inculcation of moral and spiritual
values through Integration, Islamisation,
Internationalisation and Comprehensive Excellence (IIICE)."
IIUM offers a wide range of academic programmes geared towards both
skill-building and scholastic attainments and designed in accordance with IIUM's
philosophy, which is built upon the belief that knowledge must be pursued and
propagated in the spirit of tawhid, as an act of worship, in full recognition
that it is a trust which Allah has placed upon mankind.
Malaysian graduates of IIUM have performed admirably in both the public and
private sectors. This is no doubt due to their high academic achievements,
language skills, and international exposure. Since 1987 IIUM has been producing
about 3,000 graduates annually. IIUM is truly unique if you're looking for the
right balance between worldly progress and moral wellbeing. It provides the real
foundation for a wholesome, peaceful, multicultural, multireligion and
forward-looking humanistics civilasation.

Gombak Campus
The
Kuala Lumpur Campus, covering 700 acres, is nestled in a valley in the rustic
district of Gombak, a suburb of the capital city. Its elegant Islamic-style
buildings are surrounded by green-forested limestone hills, and this is one
reason why the district attracts avid photographers from among both local
citizens and tourists. One visit to the campus is
enough to convince anyone that IIUM is indeed a Garden of Knowledge and Virtue.
This campus
houses all the facilities that a modern community is worthy of. To give just a
partial list, there is a mosque that can accommodate thousands, two
state-of-the-art sports complexes with Olympic-size swimming pools, a fully
equipped library, a 24-hour medical clinic, a well-staffed child-minding centre,
banks, post offices, restaurants, bookshops and grocery stores. A fibre-optic
backbone runs through the entire campus, facilitating instant communication from
one far-flung corner to another.
Accessibility to Kuala Lumpur is made easy not only by efficient bus and taxi
services, but also the close proximity to the campus of a light rail station.

Kuantan Campus
About 250
kilometres of Kuala Lumpur is the Kuantan Campus,1,000 acres of a virtual garden
nestled within a valley surrounded by thick forest. This is where the
Medical-Science, Pharmacy, Allied Health Sciences and Nursing faculties are
located. Kuantan is the capital city of Pahang, the greenest state in peninsular
Malaysia and geographically the largest.
It is one of the main communities on the Malaysian East Coast, famous for its
clean white beaches and a favourite destination of both local and foreign
tourists. This campus is as well-equipped as the Kuala Lumpur campus.
The Phycical
facilities feature architectural themes that are generally similar to those of
the Kuala Lumpur campus, but there are distinguishing motifs that imbue the
Kuantan campus with a character that makes it distinctive and yet remain
unseparated from the IIUM order.

Matriculation Centre
Matriculation Centre is located in a satelite town south of the metropolis. But
one need not cross the busy streets of the city to travel between the two
campuses; there are two freeways that connect the two suburbs. The travelling
time is less than an hour on either higway.

ISTAC
The
International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) is one of
faculty of IIUM, was established in 1987. It is a research and postgraduate
institution offering degrees in Islamic civilzation and Islamic science. Its
present campus consists of a main administration and academic building, a
library, a mosque and a conference hall. Its new and much larger campus is at
Persiaran Duta, Kuala Lumpur.
